Bhringraj: the 'king of herbs' for hair, explained
Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) is called the king of herbs for hair. What it is, what it's used for, and why it's paired with amla in PureRoots Coconut Herbal Oil.

Bhringraj is a small plant with white daisy-like flowers that grows in wet ground across South Asia, including Punjab and Sindh. Its Sanskrit name means "ruler of hair", and in Urdu and Punjabi households it is known as bhangra. For centuries it has been the herb for hair fall, early greying and a troubled scalp.
What bhringraj is traditionally used for
- Reducing hair fall and supporting new growth
- Keeping hair dark and slowing early greys
- Calming an itchy, inflamed scalp
- A general tonic for hair that feels weak and lifeless
What the research says
Bhringraj contains compounds (wedelolactone and others) with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Animal studies have found bhringraj extract encouraged hair growth and moved follicles into the growing phase faster. Human studies are small, so we won't overstate it. What we can say is that it has an unusually long record of safe traditional use, and that a calm, nourished scalp is the foundation for healthy growth.
Why bhringraj and amla go together
Bhringraj is almost always paired with amla. Amla brings vitamin C and antioxidants and conditions the hair shaft; bhringraj is the scalp and root herb. Together they cover both halves of the problem. PureRoots Coconut Herbal Oil infuses both into pure coconut oil, along with brahmi, methi, hibiscus, neem, rosemary and shikakai.
How to use it
Like all herbal oils, bhringraj works through regular scalp massage. Warm the oil, massage it into the scalp for 5–10 minutes, leave it on for an hour or two (or overnight) and wash out with a mild shampoo. Once or twice a week, for at least eight weeks.

Common questions
Is bhringraj good for hair growth?
Traditional use and early studies point to bhringraj supporting a healthy scalp and the growing phase of hair. It works through regular massage over weeks, not overnight.
Is bhringraj the same as bhangra?
Yes. Bhangra (or bhangro) is the common Urdu and Punjabi name for the same plant, Eclipta alba.
