Dandruff in Punjab's winter smog: a routine that actually works
Why dandruff gets worse in Lahore and Punjab every winter, how to tell it from a dry scalp, and a weekly oiling-and-washing routine with neem, methi and aloe.

Every November, as the smog settles over Lahore, Faisalabad and Gujranwala, the same thing happens: shoulders start showing white flakes and scalps start itching. Winter dandruff is so common in Punjab that many people accept it as normal. It isn't, and it responds well to a steady routine.
Dry scalp or dandruff?
They look similar and are treated differently.
- Dry scalp gives small, dry, white flakes and a tight feeling. It gets worse with hot showers, heaters and very frequent washing with strong shampoo.
- Dandruff gives larger, often yellowish, oily flakes and an itchy scalp. It is linked to a yeast that lives on everyone's skin and multiplies when the scalp is oily, sweaty or rarely washed.
Smog makes both worse: fine particles settle on the scalp, and people wash less in cold weather, so oil, dust and dead skin build up.
The weekly routine
- Oil the night before washing. Massage a small amount of PureRoots Coconut Herbal Oil into the scalp. Neem, methi (fenugreek) and brahmi are the traditional trio for flaky, itchy scalps, and the coconut oil softens the flakes so they wash away.
- Wash with lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water strips the scalp and makes dryness worse.
- Use a gentle herbal shampoo, properly. PureRoots Herbal Shampoo is made to deeply cleanse and soothe the scalp with aloe vera. Massage it into the scalp for a full minute. The scalp is what needs cleaning, not the lengths.
- Wash often enough. In smog season, every two to three days for most people. Letting oil and dust sit for a week feeds dandruff.
- Dry fully before covering. Don't wrap damp hair in a scarf or cap for hours.
- Wash scarves, caps and pillowcases weekly. They collect oil and flakes.
Most people see a clear improvement in two to three weeks.
Things that make dandruff worse
- Heavy oil left on for days without washing
- Sharing combs and towels
- Very sugary diets and stress (both are linked to flare-ups)
- Scratching, which inflames the scalp and spreads the problem
When to see a doctor
If flakes are thick and silvery, if there are red patches, sores or hair loss with the flaking, or if nothing improves after a month, see a dermatologist. Psoriasis, eczema and fungal infections can look like dandruff but need medicine.
Common questions
Does oiling cause dandruff?
Oiling the night before a wash softens flakes and soothes the scalp. Leaving heavy oil on for days without washing feeds dandruff. The difference is washing it out properly.
Which shampoo is good for dandruff in Pakistan?
A gentle herbal shampoo that cleans the scalp without stripping it, used every two to three days in winter. Massage it into the scalp for a minute and rinse with lukewarm water.
Why is my dandruff worse in winter?
Cold weather means fewer washes, hotter showers and indoor heaters, and in Punjab the smog adds fine particles to the scalp. All of these dry and irritate the scalp or feed the yeast behind dandruff.
