Hard water is wrecking your hair: the Lahore and Faisalabad fix
Tap water in Lahore, Faisalabad, Karachi and much of Punjab is hard. How to tell if it's behind rough, dull hair and breakage, and a routine that protects it.

If your hair feels like straw straight after washing, tangles the moment it dries, and leaves a film on your hands when you run them through it, your water may be the problem. Much of Punjab and Sindh sits on hard groundwater, and Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala and Karachi are all known for it.
What hard water does to hair
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Every wash leaves a thin mineral film on the hair and scalp. Over weeks that film:
- Roughens the cuticle, so hair looks dull and feels coarse
- Stops conditioner and oil from absorbing properly
- Dries the scalp and can make it flaky
- Makes hair tangle and snap while combing, which most people experience as "hair fall"
The last point matters: a lot of what looks like hair falling from the root in hard-water cities is actually breakage along the length.
Signs it's your water
- Hair feels rough even with a good shampoo
- Shampoo doesn't lather well
- White scale on taps, kettles and showerheads
- Hair improves noticeably when you wash it in another city, or with filtered water
A routine that protects against hard water
- Oil before every wash. This is the single most useful habit. A layer of PureRoots Coconut Herbal Oil on the lengths before washing stops minerals bonding to the hair and keeps the cuticle smooth. Coconut oil is especially good here because it penetrates the strand rather than sitting on top.
- Use a gentle shampoo and lather twice. Hard water needs a second lather to clean properly. PureRoots Herbal Shampoo is gentle enough to do that without stripping.
- Final rinse with filtered or boiled-and-cooled water. Even one bottle of filtered water as a last rinse makes a difference. Some people add a tablespoon of white vinegar to a jug of water once a week to dissolve mineral build-up.
- Comb gently from the ends up. Hard-water hair snaps easily when wet.
- Consider a shower filter. They are now available in Pakistan and remove a good part of the minerals.
What to expect
Softer hair after the first oiled wash, far less tangling within two weeks, and noticeably less breakage within a month.
Common questions
Can hard water cause hair fall?
It mainly causes breakage. Mineral build-up roughens hair so it snaps while combing. Oiling before washing and a gentle shampoo with a second lather protect against it.
Which cities in Pakistan have hard water?
Most of Punjab and Sindh, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Karachi and Hyderabad. Islamabad and the northern areas tend to have softer water.
